[b]ZOONIVERSE with Dr Robert Simpson
Almost half a million people worldwide are signed up to the Citizen Science initiative ‘Zooniverse’, which means that people with no scientific qualifications can take part in real scientific research online.
At the next meeting of the Leicester Lit & Phil on Monday 18th April at 8pm the astro-physicist Dr Robert Simpson, a member of the Galaxy Zoo team at Oxford University, will be talking about Zooniverse, home to the internet's largest, most popular and most successful citizen science projects.
Members of the Zooniverse community have already made a significant impact on international research, as Robert Simpson explained: "Zooniverse runs projects in the fields of astronomy, climate science, papyrology and more to come. Â
“As well as helping to classify images, members of the Zooniverse community have discovered a whole new family of galaxies, unveiled a mysterious object called the Voorwerp and have even unwittingly mapped the history of the Spanish flu from a century ago!"

Current Zooniverse projects are: Planethunters.org, Milky Way Project, Moon Zoo, Galaxy Zoo Hubble, Old Weather, Solar Stormwatch, Galaxy Zoo – understanding Cosmic Mergers and Galaxy Zoo – the hunt for supernovae.
Robert Simpson’s talk to the Leicester Lit & Phil is the Society’s annual lecture sponsored by the British Science Association. It will take place in the Main Gallery of the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery at 8pm on Monday 18th April and will be preceded by the AGM of the Leicester Lit & Phil.  The lecture is open to everyone but the AGM is open to Society members only.
The Leicester Literary and Philosophical Society meets on Mondays every fortnight during the season. Speakers answer questions from the audience after the talk, which is followed by refreshments.
Dr Simpson’s talk will be the final lecture of the current season and events for the new season will recommence in October 2011.
Everyone is welcome to attend, and people can either join for the year or just come along for individual talks and pay on the door for that event.
Membership of the Society is £12.50 a year (£5.00 for students) for twelve events, and the fortnightly meetings are all held at 7.30pm in the Main Gallery of Leicester’s New Walk Museum and Art Gallery.
