hi star watcher, well thats what i said to him but when you say virtually none, dose that mean somthing might happen ? and if so do you know what might happen ? my mate said somthing that made me laugh as well that when the last time it did happen the earths north pole ended up where the south pole is [8|][:@][:D] say no more.

http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html

"There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence."

As AfMan has already stated, there is no planetary alignment; there is a supposed alignement of the solstice with the galactic centre. As with most of this stuff, it is complete crud. I wrote an article on it soon after I encountered it, which may give you some more understanding.

What a great opportunity for suggesting that the additional gravitational attraction caused by the alignment would cause the tectonic plates to be more mobile and so we could expect a spate of severe earthquakes and increased vulcanism leading up to whatever date then diminishing afterwards.[8|][8|][8|]

And it's all been lost.[&o][&o][&o]

Whatever you do, don't mention 2012 to Prof. Brian Cox - his response is likely to rhyme with his surname! [:D]

It's all a complete load of tosh, to be filed away and forgotten along with the "moon landings were a fake" and "Mars will appear as big as the Moon" drivel.

HI Darkside,
I think much of the doomsday connections with 2012 is due to the Mayan calander ending on that year, and Nostradamus predicting a collision of a celestial body hitting us as well[:o] but 2012 will pass like all other doomsday years,as I think the originally Nostrodamus predicted the collision as 1999.
Your as for the poles switching,I think your mate may of been refering to the magnetic poles which do flip and is due to do so.Certainly the North Magnetic Pole is on the move and seems to be accelarating across the Arctic Ocean towards Russia.I dont know if this means its going to flip but what it does mean as it passes the North Pole over the next few years magnetic compasses will become more accurate from Europe.
Regards Les
