Astro photgraphy

Postby day_one » Sun Dec 18, 2005 7:00 pm

I've got a MEADE 90ETX PE. At some point in the early new year I would like to get started with a bit of photography. I've not properly researched this yet (starting that right now!) but in my manual it only goes into photography with a 35mm camera. I was wondering if this is the only means of photography with this telescope? I own a NIKON digital camera and was hoping this would be adequate, anyone know if I can use a digital camera? [8|]

I don't see why not, Jovian. After all your camera is just the digital version of the old film cameras. Looks like Meade need to update their manuals. What are you looking to photograph?

Jovian,

Depending on what kind of digital camera you have will have to arrange the correct type of mount. For example, if you have a digital SLR then you will need a either a 'T' mount or a 'T' mount with a 1.25" nose piece. If you have a non-SLR camera ( i.e. one that does not have interchangeable lenses ) then you will need a mounting bracket to align the camera with the eyepiece.

If you can post the exact Nikon camera you have, I will be able to advise further.

OK, the NIKON Coolpix 2200 is a standard digital compact camera with a 2 Mpixel sensor. As you say, the lens is not interchangeable so to take photographs though a telescope, you will need a bracket to hold the camera at the correct distance in line with an eyepiece of your choice - this is called 'afocal' photography.

The following links will indicate the sorts of brackets that are available:-
