I must have been away when this thread started but I am mightily impressed with your observatory's progress so far, you have done a really good job. The bivies for a temporary roof are a very good idea - in fact, apart from security, I could see this working as a 'permanent' solution as all the dome has to do is keep the water and stray light out!

Please continue to keep us posted on your progress.

roofs being designed at the moment...

[image]http://www.btinternet.com/~psmithuk/stuff/roof.jpg[/image]

12 will be a 12 sided design with 9 sides fixed (rotates as one unit) with 90 degrees opening or removable (there will be a 12 sided "manhole" for viewing the zenith...the sides will be covered with the 4" upvc shiplap that was on the observatory walls till this morning...

Only problem is with that design the top of the dome will be nearly 3m off the floor level and seems a waste of materials and also adds to the weight (and visual impact ) so I have been playing with the idea of a flattened dome design...although this does fit the dome to the scope a bit...

This drops the apex of the dome to 2.3m which is much more managable the highly sloped sides will also reduce the wind loading a lot..so this looks like a plan....

Heres a sketch of the flattened dome design showing the cross section and the viewport...

Cutting list for all the wooden truss work and UPVC covering next....

Segmented dome running ring...cut in both 25mm plywood and 2mm stainless steel...will be glued and screwed (after leveling) to the top frame and the roof.. rollers between the two stainless steel surfaces) - still working on that mechanism....

A Day of very heavy showers so I added the complex mitred diagonal nogins to strengthen the door "frame" made the double doors and fitted them when it cleared up in the afternoon......

Levelled the top subring ready for the circular mounting ring to be fitted once I get it made hopefully this week...

Also cut out the area infront of the doors to lay some concrete slabs with the doors held open this forms a useful "bay" for the PC maybe...

Hi Les.

Wet wasn't the word I would have used today .... but its a family forum... Shorts and t-shirt and soaking wet...but just got to keep going with the "project"

I made the doors in the garage during the worst of the rain watched the GP and hung them and clad them once the rain cleared this afternoon...

Hopefully get the dome ring laser cut this week ready for fixing next weekend... then its scrounging time again for the materials for the roof...or at least wait until payday [8|]

Cards have taken a slight hammering...

But have got three 8'x4' x 18mm exterior ply ready to be laser cut tomorrow.

I have redesigned the dome ring sectiuons so that I will get 12x 45 degree sections out of a sheet so 2 sheets will give me 24 parts enough to make 3 complete rings - double thickness for the top of the observatory wall and single for the dome itself.

I have also designed the rafters for the dome and managed to fit 12 sets onto a single 8x4 sheet.. the rafters are designed in two parts so that a zenith hole can be removed... all the joints for the 2x1" spreaders are already cut into the rafters and the bottom of each rafter has two "tenons" to fit into mortice joints in the dome ring...

Also bought various UPVc sections to tidy up the observatory walls...

Getting there...

Assembled the dome ring ouit of 16 x 45 degree segments of 18mm ply glued double thickness with the joints overlapping ... Ring has OD=2550mm and ID=2200mm

Needs to be centered leveled and fixed to the top of the observatory walls... thats the weekend job...

Sorry for the carp picture but it was a late finish...

Also got the 12 segment dome ring and all the plywood trusses to start assembling the roof ...need more glue though...
