Can anyone tell me what the blue object is?

Postby netherwhere » Mon Mar 17, 2014 1:11 pm

Hello!

I'm new to the forum and know very little about the night sky beyond the basics. I was wondering if someone could help me?

I recently visited family in Spain and took a few simple photos at night of the moon as it had a spectacular halo around it. That was it. However, when I looked at the photos I found a blue sphere/planet(?) and thought that it may have been Neptune or Uranus. No idea.

I couldn't see the object with the naked eye, but it showed up in every photo taken. The location was in the mountains with no street or car lights. The only light was from the moon. I used a Nikon D5100 and tripod with a 18-55mm and 55-300mm lens. The photos were taken on 11/03/2014 between 23:21 and 23:45.

So, can anyone tell me what the object is?

Hi Netherwhere,

Its a lens flare caused by the light of the overexposed moon reflecting off the lens of your camera. If you type 'Camera Lens Flare Moon' into google images you will find many such identical images along with some good tutorials on how to avoid it.

Kind regards
