Comet 41P/Tuttle-Giacobini-Kresak

Sat Apr 01, 2017 5:38 pm

Last night (31st March) I tried to image this comet. It is just below naked eye visibility, and although quite diffuse is visible through binoculars. To me, through 50x 70s, it looked like a largish, very dimly lit coin, with quite a sharp edge.
The image was 24x1min exposures stacked. The comet is moving quite quickly against the background of stars, and when stacked the stars trail.
The comet was located between the Great and Little Bears. The image was very different from the view of it through binoculars. The bright 'nucleus' is very noticeable, and there is a slight asymmetry. The comet will be near the star, 'Thuban' for the next couple of days.

As I understand it, this comet was discovered and lost three times, which is why it has 3 names!
