Comet Nr Jupiter???

Postby casey » Mon Apr 24, 2006 12:26 am

Did anyone see what looked like a comet or a cloud or a high sky anomoly with two tails tonight?, just to the top left of Jupiter? (23/04/06 23:21). Im in Scotland with crystal clear skies and a 8" Bresser Newtonian. My star software says no but it's really bright and at low mag looks like a large smoke ring?! What is it?

Hi Andy,
There's not a comet in that vicinity that I'm aware of,I know that Jupiter is very close to the double star Zubenelgenubi at the moment, there are also a few faint NGC galaxies in that area such as NGC5796.That's all I can think of really, unless you've made a discovery, now that would be nice[:)]

I just looked NGC5796 up and it's magnitude 13,so that rules that out!

Just been looking at Jupiter with my LX 10 nothing unusual seen from here (North Wales) - so dont know.

Actually went out to observe the comet (73P -WS)
not a very good view as I was looking through the heat generated by a building (was too lazy to go to my usual site!)

Gone out of my field of view now but (what must have been a cloud formation) must have been close to home the way it was moving... very strange however... thanks for looking!

Hi andy' there are two objects what i can think of what you might have seen.Either a bright meteor with magnitude -3 or over is classed as a fireball or maybe a very bright iridium flare what goes bright for a few seconds then it goes dim again.[:D] mark
