Hi all I managed to take this image last week aslo I checked on platesolver and this is the details it gave me which were Christmas Tree cluster,NGC 2264,The star 15Mon.I used this image and platesolver gave me as the image by using sdss on their system as an experiment.I thought I would share. Thanks for looking.I did the first in black and white and the second in colour, also did the third image in Hdr.

I'm finding it hard to know what I'm looking at. Are we seeing composite 'platesolver' images here? The Christmas tree is a bit large to image through a large telescope, and rather dim to image with a small telescope. The 'cluster' of stars being easier to see than the nebula. The nebula isn't bright at all. A camera with a zoom lens (135mm) piggybacking off a telescope can give acceptable images with a long exposure. However, I can't say I've been able to get a satisfactory image of it, but no doubt I'll try again this year. The 'cone' nebula is a dark nebula which takes a chunk out of the Christmas tree, which rather spoils the shape.IMHO!
I use an 11" Celestron SCT (CPC 1100) on an equatorial wedge, housed in a 2.2m Pulsar observatory. I use a ZWO ASI1600MC and Canon 500D for imaging.

Hi Aratus I used my image and used sdss in the platesolver that created the image,as I was experimenting, but could not believe it gave me the image.

As I understand it the 'platesolver' identifies the area of the sky found on your own image by letting you see a composite sky image from their database. It would be interesting to see your own original image. Fortunately this nebula/cluster will be around for several months and there will be plenty of opportunities to practice on it. I am wondering if a mosaic of images could be taken, and joined together . . .
