Converting Camera Lens

Postby mickyblueyes » Wed Apr 30, 2008 6:16 pm

I have a 400mm f6.3 (60mm objective) T-Mount lens with an M42 adapter. Does anyone know of an easy way to adapt this to use as a telescope? Is there any point? I'd like something a little more portable than my 8" reflector but am reluctant to spend lots of cash if the results aren't going to be worth it or if I might as well buy a cheap refractor from ebay...

Many thanks in advane for any suggestions.

Hi Rob,

It certainly can be worth it can be worth it :)

I knocked up a couple of trial adaptos in my garage workshop and used a variety of different SLR lenses with the Meade DSI imagers.

Hi,

I've done this too, with a cheap ebay 300mm lens I was going to use as a finder. I made an adapter with some black plumbing PVC tube that happened to fit, but my lens had a handy internal thread that the tube was screwed into. Its ok for low power only, but it was only £15.

Check the distance you need from the lens to get focus with an eyepiece by holding one up to it, the Astro-engineering adapter may not be long enough and might need a short extension. Also note that the back focus will be too short to use a diagonal.

Once you've got the adapter, there's a lot of old larger aperture M42 lenses about to play with!

Good luck,

Theo

Many thanks Theo (and sorry for delay in replying - don't log on that often!). I'll experiment a bit before buying. You're right about the availabiltiy of quality lenses on ebay. Fortunately I have some M42 extension tubes so I may be ok.
