Earthshine during a total eclipse of the Sun

Postby Pete Lawrence » Fri Mar 31, 2006 12:36 am

When the Moon is new from the Earth, the Earth is full from the Moon. The light from the full Earth faintly illuminates the Moon making the new Moon visible against a dark sky. For the most part the sky is way too bright to see this effect. However, at the time of a total eclipse of the Sun, it is possible to capture this phenomenon...

Peter,

Very interesting phenomenon and a stunning image to demonstrate it.

That is quite an incredible picture Pete. Don't think I've ever seen that effect before during daylight hours. Loved your other shots. I take it you'll be adding them to the photo gallery. (Hint, Hint!!)

Hi Peter,
I've seen many images of total eclipses but to the best of my knowledge I don't think I've ever seen Earthshine during a total eclipse. I would definately upload this second image to the hotshots section of the magazine website.
Fantastic and amazing image. I hope you don't mind but I am going to save this image to my disc drive. I would like your permission to use it for essay purposes should the need arise. Please let me know if you have an objection, credit to the photo will of course be given directly to you and you will be informed of its use.
Thanks for sharing the image!
John.

Hi Pete

That really is a stunning image, I was also there with you all in Turkey on the BBC S@N trip, and I think you have captured the corona beautifully. I didn't notice the earthshine on the moon visually at the time though.

Cheers

I'll try and post some of my images. I was in the same hotel as Pete on the trip amd my images too show this side of the moon with earthshine as me and my girlfriend discussed last nite. Mine have upto a second of exposure which has brought this out

Great news Gregger,
Looking forward to seeing the pictures as you post them. If the pics are as good as those posted by Peter, hen my request to him (see the above posting) will apply to your pics as well. If you have any objections then please let me know.
Thanks
John.

I've added a new album to the gallery in the Members Photos, "Gregger's Eclipse"

My eclipse sequence is there.

If you sort them by "photo title" a half decent sequence slideshow comes up!

Some photos of totality have earthshine on them. The useless cathode ray screen at work here shows bvery poor detail, but good detail on my laptop TFT screen
