A place to hang out and chat about astronomy

An enormous explosion that took place on the surfgace of a star many thousands of years ago has revealed a rare magnetar. The discovery made by the ESA's XMM-Newton probe provided the most detailed view of magnetar outburst decay that has ever been discovered. Magnetars are dead stars that have conditions that cannot be produced here on Earth and so are of extreme interest to astronomers in their study of stellar evolution.
