Finally got round to balancing the OTA

Postby psychobilly » Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:43 pm

At last my Heavily overloaded CPC has been balanced ... could hear it breathing a sigh of relief...

[image]http://www.btinternet.com/~psmithuk/stuff/scw2.jpg[/image]

4.6kg of brass and a non-cpc counter weight rail (non CPC till I got my hands on it [8D]) A couple of mins to make an adaptor plate to pick up the two hole rear fixing on the cpc instead of the single hole meade type...15 mins on the bandsaw to cut through the 3" diameter brass bar... set up the 5" long slug in the 4 jaw chuck on the lathe a bit of turning.. a bit of drilling...and some tapping...and the jobs a good un...

The scope is now slightly out of balance (deliberately) in dec as opposed to being very nose heavy and thats with the D200, KM5D and DSI II C all loaded up for an imaging session...

Only thing is I have to unscrew the counterweight to carry the scope any distance or lift it onto the pier... as all up it now weighs in at 31 kg

Rainy nights are good for something after all :)

Looks the biz Billy [;)] Nice, compact and portable ( well besides the back breaking 30+ kg's [8D] )

Why have you loaded it in dec, i thought one was meant to always load it slightly in RA on the eastern side ??

Hi Kev,

It's slightly out just to make sure that the dec worm is in positive contact with the gear with the clutch released the OTA stays in place and requires slight pressure to get it to move. The RA un-balance results from replacing the normal finder scope with the 500mm/DSI II C guidescope setup...

Waiting (like everyone else) for the next clear spell to try it out on the pier/wedge...

Forecast looks pretty carp for the weekend though :(

Everytime I see a picture of your scope PB it looks more and more like its going to take over the world, all it needs is a projectile launching system, cos you know it tracks like a beast already [8D] Although the flowery curtains are ruining it's mystique.

All part of the master plan Reggie .... Camouflage ;)

Need to make some space to squeeze in the Green LP again though...

Makes a lot of sense. Otherwise when you correct the position in one direction there is a "lag" which can result in an overcorrection being made.

But think of the effect the resulting "thermals" will have on the seeing ;)

Just the green lp left to fit...
