GEM1 counterweight bar

GEM1 counterweight bar

Postby kev » Sat Nov 07, 2009 5:36 pm

Hi
I'm trying to get hold of a counterweight bar for a GEM1 mount that a friend bought with his Orion Optics Europa 200 a few years ago.
The manufacturer of the mount has gone bankrupt so I can't get one from them.
Any got one spare or have any idea where I can get one ?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Kev.

Only place I can think of is Astro Engineering, Ely, it's the only outfit I know of that make astro bits, there is another but not sure of their range, and at this time their name.

I think that AE make extension bars so may have or may be able produce one relatively easily.

Equally I would have thought that it was a case of rod diameter and thread size? So a local engineering shop may be able to help if you have the details.

Never bought via web from AE and I hear of hiccups with the group they are part of. Hiccups usually involve buying items that they don't actually have as immediate stock so having one made should avoid that. Still worth remembering.

Simplest (and cheapest) solution is probably be to get hold of some matching threaded rod, aka "studding", together with a few wing-nuts, hex-nuts and washers. Weights are easily available, or you can make your own by wrapping lead flashing around the rod and covering it with gaffer tape or, if you are feeling adventurous, casting your own from lead in a clean and dry food tin.

Thanks for both your replies.

I think I'll try and find a local engineering firm and get a quote from them.

Cheers

Are they still in business? Most of their lines seem to be discontinued....

The astro-friendly UK engineering firms I'm aware of who will attempt custom jobs are Ambermile and Epsilon.
