Group Test for 8" Gotos

Postby starbound » Sun Apr 26, 2009 2:33 pm

I am a more recent subscriber to the Sky at Night magazine. I noticed in the index that in July 2007 a group test was done on 8" goto systems. Does anyone have the results of that, or would share a summary of the results. I am considering the purchase of a system like that. Thank You!

Meade LX90 GPS (Alt/Az mount) 89% (highly commended) (£1680)

My pleasure. I can't comment any further on the other thre systems but one thing that the reviewer didn't like about the Skywatcher Explorer 200 was the rack and pinion focus unit - apparently this now ships with a better Crayford unit.

It does shipe with the standard Crayford. Its good and a recent review of a different scope ( The Sky-Watcher Mak-Newt 190 ) the reviewer said the focuser was a bit basic but fundamentally alright.

I found mine worked well enough but I found it a bit 'ugly' so I swapped mine out for a Moonlite.

It's the same focuser on the 8" as on the ED80 (I think!). Personally I find it looks ok, certainly a cast improvement over the R&P focuser I was used to on my Meade. It's like everything else, once you try something better you always want it!. I must hoke out that magazine and have a read at the review!
