Hello from South Devon

Postby guinness » Thu Sep 07, 2006 6:23 pm

Hello all

I am a complete novice when it comes to Astronomy but love the subject. The only book I have on it I got recently and it's called, funnily enough, Astronomy by Ian Ridpath. Great little book in conjunction with the Sky at Night magazines.

I will want to get a telescope sometime soon - so any suggestions would be great.

Anyway, just a hello from someone with little knowledge, but a lot of interest. :)

Hi Cluster from south Devon & welcome [:D]. I'm new here too. You will have to fund your telescope purchase yourself being member 1018.
By pure chance I was number 1000, a membership milestone I'm sure you'd agree but alas, no £1000, no $1000, not a bean ! But I'm lucky enough to have already forked out for my pride & joy !
Don't forget everyone here was a novice at some point !

Hello Cluster and welcome to the forum.

With such a wide range of telescopes available, you'll need to narrow down the search by trying to decide what type of subject interests you the most as a good 'deep sky object' telescope will not necessarily make a good planetary telescope and so on. It will also make a huge difference if your interest is in imaging rather than viewing.

Hi Cluster,
Welcome to the forum, glad to have you aboard.
What telescope you buy will depend mainly on what you want it for. If you want to just observe the night sky then a dobsonian will suit you best. You can get a relatively large aperture for little money. If it's imaging that you are after, then you will need a motorised scope. My suggestion would be to visit as many telescope sales websites as possible, you should find what you are looking for there.
john.
To me astronomy is looking up and thinking "What the heck is going on up there!!"

Hi Cluster
I'm also a devonian and have exactly the same book. if your looking for a telescope I suggest you have a look at the Sky Watcher range. I have a SKYHAWK 1145 reflector. but as you are new to astronomy i personally think you shoud get a refractor. also try Beacon Hill Telescopes they are a supplier i use.

cheers Ariel
