help controlling a Celestron

Postby EIZO » Sun Nov 26, 2017 9:22 pm

Most annoyed, I have been thrown out of the forum twice, have no idea why server problem perhaps.

I have just returned to Astronomy and bought NEXSTAR EVOLUTION 8 HD WITH STARSENSE
Two questions please.

1. Can you tell me which remote focuser fits this scope, say JMI, I can't locate one that says it actually fits this tube, or how it fits.

2. I want/need to control the scope NOT with a tablet/phone but PC, is it possible if sho what software is needed. Happy to lay a USB lead if WiFi is out.

many thanks

Re motor focuser: that's something I've been looking for an answer to for some time. Recently came across Pegasus Astro (pegasusastro.com). Bit pricey mind, but comparable to other solutions. Let me know what solution you end up with.

Re control of the mount: there's a serial port in the bottom of the hand controller that's uses an RJ11 connector. You can buy or make a serial lead and then use an RS232 to usb converter to convert it to your PC. Download the ASCOM driver from Celestron, which you can use with many apps to control the mount.

The infamous 'line 666' bug perhaps.
I use an 11" Celestron SCT (CPC 1100) on an equatorial wedge, housed in a 2.2m Pulsar observatory. I use a ZWO ASI1600MC and Canon 500D for imaging.

I just tried it from my tablet computer via my ISP's content filter and the site loaded. I suggest you review the site with a portable device (Android or Apple) first and if you are comfortable with it then add it to your PC's AV exception list.
