Import of new Philips SPC900/NC CCD Camera

Import of new Philips SPC900/NC CCD Camera

Postby phgill » Thu Mar 30, 2006 12:10 am

[:)]Hi I have been importing Philips web cams into the US for over 4 years now and I've just received a shipment of the newest model - the SPC900/NC from Philips. It's a CCD web camera, similar to the Model 840/740 units. Just to let you know it's available now, here in the US.

Hi Paula, and thanks for the 'heads up' on this one.

This model is now available in the UK too, and Amazon (UK) are selling it at £50 ($87 US) including delivery.

How does this 'stack up' with prices Stateside?

As you are no doubt aware, it uses the same Sony ICX098 CCD as the now discontinued PCVC840K, and as such should achieve the same following among CCD astro imagers, as did the 840K.

Hi, yes, I knew that Europe has had these available for a little while. Sometimes it takes a little bit longer to get to the US. The prices here are a bit higher because of the import taxes/duties. I did research and the lowest price I saw in the UK was $106 (US) or about £59.99. I used a currency converter and thought it was about $106 (US). I'm trying to work with another group to import the adapter piece so that the previously telescope adapters will work with the new unit. I'm so glad that Philips still uses the same Sony CCD; it's a wonderful and inexpensive camera that really works for both astronomy and microscopy work. I used the Philips cameras to attach to my microscope making a really inexpensive video microscope.

Hi again Paula

The recommened retail price for this camera in UK is £80 ($140 US), that's applying an exchange of $1.74 to the £. However, with competition being the way it is, there won't be too many sold over here at £80.

There are several astronomy equipment retailers in UK that sell the 1.25" adapter for web-cams, namely the 840K, but I don't yet know if the length of the barrel thread, will be the same for the SPC900.

There are very few web-cams on the market that offer a 1 Lux sensitivity, which is down to the use of the Sony ICX098 CCD.

Ok on the use for microscopy, I have a couple of microscopes , but one's a Stereo and the other a Binnocular, so not really suited for use with a camera.

BTW, welcome to this forum.

I know of a company (astronomy group, too) that have made a special adapter that works in between the telescope adapter to make it all work - I've attached it to this message. Please let me know if you're able to see it. The company is in Portugal I believe.

So Dave, are you saying this has the same ccd as the toucam pro 2 840? If so I cannot see any reason to change. Or am I missing summat?

It is the exact same CCD, the reason for letting people know is that the Pro 2 ToUcam is no longer available. The SPC900 is the replacement camera.
