Jan issue - best Newtonian <£460

Postby joselouviere » Thu Feb 08, 2007 8:26 pm

Hi All,

Was going to buy the SkyWatcher Explorer 150 but realised the Jan issue did a group test of 6" Newtonians under £460. Whilst I'm waiting for the back issue to come through the post so I can read up on them all, can anyone tell me which one won and which came second so I can start to find the best places to buy.

Thanks,

Andy

I think I just answered my own question. Looked up the prices of them all and only the Celestron and SkyWatcher are in my price range. I know both of these come form the same factory and are excellent scopes, and Dave kindly confirmed that the SkyWatcher piped the Celestron.

Back to my original plan!

I thought the first placed Orion Europa at £459 was a bit pricey for a 6",mind you it was the same price 10 yrs ago.I was thinking of upgrading to the Skywatcher 150,but don't think there'll be a great difference between that and my SW 130P.I think I'll hang on untill my house sale has gone through and I've moved somewhere with darker skies, then get an 8"-10" instead.

I bought my 12" Lightbridge Dob second hand for £425. I know this review was about new scopes - but as scopes lose value in a similar way to new cars I think second hand has a lot to offer - although of course you need to take someone with you who is able to assess the condition of the scope effectively.

Sounds like a good plan! Other options are getting a better mount and/or an apochromatic refractor. Just bear in mind that you can usually get a far better price buying a package of mount+OTA.
