Large aperture?

Postby retik » Fri Mar 19, 2010 2:53 pm

Hi, portability and cool down time aside are there any major drawbacks to a 300-350mm newtonian.
Thanks for any advice.

No real drawbacks I suppose. They cost more, they need a big mount if you intend to use an equatorial (EQ6), more room to store them.

Hi retik,

Size. It's big.
A Dobsonian is not a problem to store though, because it stores in an upright position (usually) and that's fine.

If I didn't always have my lightshroud fitted, I'm sure the cat would get in through the truss tubes and go to sleep on the mirror...

So, drawbacks?
To be honest?
I think as I get older I'm less likely to be able to haul it about without a little more dismantling.
For now it's fine and the views have been just great.

Have you got a scope at all right now? or tried one out?

Have you tried a Dobsonian? because they are usually pretty rock steady.
