Making your own dob

Postby thething » Mon Jan 28, 2008 1:20 pm

I did raise a query about this here but never got any response.

Maybe in this new board someone can help?

Thanks,

I am assuming you are talking about mirrors?! rather than lenses.

Do science store do one big enough?

Astromart in ythe US is good for mirrors.. or galvoptics in the uk... but expensive.

Making your own mirror really would bring the cost down.

Friar Dobson uses ships porthole glass, but you can pick up blanks quite cheaply i believe.

Only for big ones; you'd be hard pressed to make an 8" or below for what you can buy one for. The main value of starting on a small mirror (apart from the satisfaction of having done your own) is to get teh experience that you need before you start a biggun!

agreed!
aluminising and coating does seem expensive and you have to factor in your own time..

There is a bit of a steepening price curve as you go up in diameter.
