How do you get fine detail on planets.

2 days ago I studied Jupiter and saw its rings and 4 of its moons with a reasonable degree of sharpness. Last night I tried to view Venus but all I could see was a super bright white ball with slightly fuzzy edges. How can I get detail from my 8 inch GSO dobsonian? Do I need to cover part of the apature or use some kind of filter please?

Questions from a BK1309 EQ2 newbie

Hello Forum Folk!
Just signed up as I'm a total newbie to astronomy. It took a 76 years birthday present of a BK1309 EQ2 to get me started and already I'm loving it! I spent my working life in engineering so its not too daunting but help with two questions would be appreciated.
In setting up the RDF, I located a distant spire in the 'scope eyepiece with 25mm lens. But there isn't enough lateral ...

Easy to set up and carry, light weight, and can use basically straight away when set up. My main interests are DSO’s galaxies star clusters ect.So after going through many reviews on different scopes I’ve decided that the Star Travel 102 would be ...

Why are PST and other solar scopes still so expensive.

I won't moan about you have it all in the US especially when it comes to low cost gear, which is a LOT cheaper that we have in the Uk, but even taking in to account our money grabbing government who add 20% VAT to our purchases,

Why are PST and other solar scopes still so expensive.

Surely the parts that make up a PST can not justify £900 ( $1272.84 )

I appreciate the ...
