minimising Star trails ?

I found this from a 2008 sky at night article Shooting the stars:
Take out the star trails
The rotation of the Earth will make Orion appear to move slowly from east to west. The shorter the focal length of your camera lens, the longer the exposure you can get away with before you start getting star trails in your image. The formula for working out how long you’ve got is
Time (seconds) = 1000 ...

PSU requirement for a Sky-Watcher EQ6 pro

Had a search for EQ6 pro to find out what current it draws from the power supply.
Nothing in this Forum's search and nothing in the mount documentation.

So I measured the current at the battery feeding the EQ6pro (mVdrop across a 1r0 resistor)
I got ~100mA when I switched on.
Did a few Alt and Dec slews (one at a time) and it hovered around 950mA while fast slewing.
Then left it doing nothing ...

Camera lens or an apo refractor?

The new Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 looks interesting and has received excellent reviews. It's currently retailing for £799. I figure you could get a 2.5" triplet apo refractor for the money. The lens of course offers autofocus and stabilisation on top of the variable focal length. But the refractor would have better contrast for astronomy work.

Thoughts? (I've already got a 66mm doublet refractor.)

where to locate the Barlow?

I lost my post !

Starting again
I have bought a refractor to replace my not good 6" Newtonian.
The scope has a 2" focuser, and I ordered a 2" diagonal and a 2" Barlow.
What order do it place the diagonal and Barlow?

Focuser > Barlow > diagonal > eyepiece
or
Focuser > diagonal > Barlow > eyepiece

The Barlow came with 2" to 1.25" adaptor, so I can use either 2" or 1.25" ...

Telescope cases

Hello,

I am a complete beginner and have no idea what I'm doing, but I have decided to buy a telescope and have settled on a Skywatcher evostar 120 with an eq5 mount. I guess my first question is do I need a case for both the telescope and the mount?

I will be taking it in my car to get dark skies so I assume that I do for the telescope as this is ...

Newtonian Spherical Projection System

I recently purchased at auction an entire projection system from a university. It's all from a company called "spice automation" from what I can tell it's from 1992. I have no idea what a good place to get rid of some of this equipment would be or even what it does. Right now I have a Newtonian Spherical Projection System about to go on ebay tonight, but as for the rest??? anyone ever heard of ...

Beginners telescope & book recommendations, please.

Hi, I'm looking for a telescope for my daughter's 9th birthday. She would want to be able to see details of the moon and also the whole moon, stars and ideally some real 'wow' views.
She is also a keen birdwatcher, so one that can be used for that too, would be great. However, if it really meant she wouldn't get such a good view of the night sky, then we may reconsider this aspect. ...

Astrophotography Beginners Equipment Help

Hi all,

I am sure you get this a lot, and I have read a few posts and articles about starting astrophotography and it seems it can be done step by step which I think I will need to do.

Basically, I can invest a bit of money at a time, but not all at once - I know I will have to learn and work towards those amazing DSO images and it's going to ...
