I am a new astronomer and I have been taking every opportunity to check out new things that I can find in the sky. The last few nights I have been battling partly cloudy skies that seem to take over just in time for me to get my telescope ready for use. Tonight, I set up and found a break in the sky that lasted only 20 minutes or so but I was able to ...

Should I have seen P35 - 9.1.1 ?

After watching the sky cloud over for months now, (apart of course around full moon) I was getting a bit distressed, but Saturday the 7th and Sunday through to Monday wee hours have been pretty good nights.

first light Skyliner 200p

Lovely clear still viewing last night/wee small hours.
My first view ever of these;
M13,M82 and 81,M51 and 5194,M103,M36,37,38.
Saturn and 4 moons, Mars and Venus.
The deep sky looked amazing. I started off with a wide 40mm and just put in smaller eyepieces and a x2 Barlow.
The scope is amazing with very clear definition.WOW

M102 and M106

I spotted both for the first time last night. There's some controversy about M102 but it is believed to be a mag 10.0 galaxy in Draco. Using a 5" 'scope, it was barely visible. M106 was different and I could see a spiral structure that reminded me of M33 through my bins on a night where it is visible but hard and the spiral arms can sometimes appear to be detached from the nucleus.

First proper viewing with my first telescope

Well it's been a night of firsts! First proper viewing through my first telescope and seeing Mars for the first time. I am sitting here feeling awed and humbled. I can go outdoors right now and point to another planet in our solar system. I can see it with my eyes! Even the slight orange tint is noticeable!

A full write-up is on my journal but to sum it up: I am amazed, excited and ...
