most useful accessory?

It would be handy i think to know what your favourite or most usefull item is , could be anything from an eyepiece to an item of clothing that makes our vigil under a cold sky more comfortable, at the moment mine is a 25 mil wide angle eyepiece, it gives great views of a lot of sky, oh and a balaclava it keeps my ears warm[:D]. There must be loads more bits and pieces that we use , might be something someone uses and you think,"what a good idea, ill try that" so come on lets hear those good ideas, doesnt matter how wacky [;)]

Good question. Being a film astrophotographer, after the scope itself it has to be my ST4 autoguider.

Without question I would say my stool. Being able to sit down while observing through my 10" dob makes all the difference on how long I stay out under the stars. I'm not one to find an object, take a look and move on to the next. I like to camp out and take in all I can for a good length of time. My experence has shown me that I'm able to see so much more this way.

Many observers like to make sketches of objects. This helps in the same way. So paper and pencil is another usefull item. Although I don't always sketch I do try to keep a log.

An item of clothing? Yes come to think of it I have to have a hat.

Sketching is quite a rare art nowadays. Any chance of you scanning some of your questions & posting them here, Harmsway. It's always nice to see a good scetch.

Well my sketches are in very light pencil so the scans are hard to see. But here is one I did of ngc 2362.

So time ago I made up a form to keep my sketch records on. Information such as, telescope, eyepiece, magnification, date, ect.

Les,
I don't mean to be rude, but this is quite a serious hobby of ours, and I personally find that to drink brandy whilst undertaking observing only sets a bad example to the younger generation. Personally, I find if you substitute the brandy with Pussers Rum, you will achieve much better results. (Can't stand brandy!)

As a CCD imager, it has to be my Hartman Mask focusing aid, which makes focusing with the camera in place, quick and easy.

Great value for money too. Compared to the rest of the kit which cost several thousand pounds, I made the Hartman Mask from a piece of stiff carboard and gave it at coat of Blackboard Paint. Of course you can buy them ready made for around £40, but they don't work any better than mine, costing around 40p.

Mine has to be my photo' jacket - Loads of pockets to keep eyepieces, filters, maps, leads etc, clips for a torch, keys in fact almost everything I need can be put somewhere (even the Brandy)

my most useful accessory has to be the 'Round Tuit' [image]http://forum.skyatnightmagazine.com/micons/m5.gif[/image]

This marvelous little device would allow me to image hundreds of Deep Sky Objects, update my equipment, print out all my best images and share them on the internet!

I keep saying I will do all these things as soon as I get one!!
