My first comet image - ISON

My first comet image - ISON

Postby LDUNN1 » Fri Nov 22, 2013 12:24 am

Imaged on the morning of Tuesday 19th Nov 2013 from mid New Forest, during the small window of opportunity between ISON rising above the ESE horizon & the pre-dawn light, oh, & to make matters worse in was only a few days away from a full moon, but cloud had scuppered prior opportunities. It was probably one of the hardest targets & conditions I've faced since starting astro in 2011. I even had to turn off the mount movement limits in software to reach the target!

First time I've attempted a Comet astro image. I shot with an Atik 460EX mono & LRGB filters, shooting around 10 of each L 60 secs 1x1 bin, with each of the RGB's being 30 secs 2x2.

I then stacked in DSS using both the align to comet & align to stars, so I had 8 mono images to play with in Photoshop, superimposing the comet images on the star images.

I'm treating this as a practice run for the real thing when (if) it returns in December, bigger, brighter & hopefully under better conditions!

Original photo is approx. 2500x2000 pixels, but I've resized to closer to approx. 800x600 to make it easier to see in this forum

That's a fantastic image you've captured of ISON! You should send it to the magazine for publication.
