From today's News of the World newspaper...

WET ALERT : MASS FLOODS COMING ON SEPTEMBER 9

[i]'Brits are being urged to brace themselves for a wave of devastating floods with some of the highest tides in 20 years set to hit the UK coastline

Seaside towns are already on alert as the freak tides - some reaching more than six metres - are predicted on September 9.

The Environment Agency has warned that if these areas are battered by more wet and windy weather, they will be in the grip of mass flooding.

It expects the risk to increase over the next three weeks, peaking between September 9 and 11.

A spokeswoman said: "If we have any bad weather on top of that, it will push up the sea surge to create flooding."

Torerrential downpours have hit the South East recently.

Last week there were flash flood warnings for Yorkshire and the Midlands. Experts fear that with unsettled weather likely to continue over the next few weeks, coastal areas will be in danger from the high tides - caused by the way the Earth, Moon and Sun align.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Rain and wind could boost swells and increase the flooding risk. A rapid change in the weather is forecast at the end of the month with rain spreading to all parts."

Towns and villages along the Bristol Channel have been warned. Uphill near Weston-Super-Mare, which was flooded during the Spring tides, is vulnerable again. The Environment Agency said: "There are predicted high astronomical tides across the region with heights of up to 6.04 metres."

Tides could also be a metre higher than usual on the Norfolk coast. Hunstanton, Heacham and Snettisham could all be hit. And makeshift sea defences will be tested in Felixstowe, Suffolk.

In the past ten years, the government has spent more than £4 billion on managing the UK's flood risk.

* You can protect your property in a flood by turning off gas, electricity and water at the mains; storing electrical items as high as possible; moving furniture upstairs; removing curtains and carpets.
