Orion Constellations M42 + M43 Galaxies - Wed 28 Dec 2016

I have just seen Orion's M42 + M43 Galaxies between 12.15AM + 12.24AM - even though we have a little street light - the Galaxies are visible to the eye - but too faint to take a photo of - I don't have a Telescope - also full Gemini Constellation - left of Orion + full Plough Constellation - North North East

It's always a pleasure to see the wonders of the night sky, even when there's street lighting.

Interestingly, what you saw were not galaxies, but gas clouds inside our own galaxy - places where gas and dust are collapsing to form new stars. It's a bit of a historical legacy, that we call both external galaxies and more local gas clouds 'nebulae'.

If you have a tripod and a camera capable of taking long exposures (up to 10 seconds), you can take photographs of the night sky even without a telescope. You will get better images if you can get away from street lights of course, so if you have local parkland it can help - better to drive out of town altogether though - if you can.
