Phenix 5" scope, factory second

Phenix 5" scope, factory second

I have a number of these which members may be interested in...

The offer is for the 5" rich field OTA only and does not include any accessories. I'm selling these as seconds because they have failed our quality control checks on the following basis.

The OTAs all suffer from astigmatism to varying degrees... this is not particularly intrusive for terrestrial use and they can generally be used at low powers for astronomy if you aren't too critical. It is possible the problem might be fixable by someone experienced in realigning retractor optics - but I would certainly not guarantee this. The bottom line is that with the small margins on these instruments it simply isn't commercially viable for me to try...

Delivery would be £10, but other than that any reasonable offers would be considered. So if you are looking for a large aperture guide scope these may be ideal.

Please email me if you are interested as I rarely remember to check my PMs and you may miss out as this is offered on a first come first served basis.

What's your bottom line price? I'm assuming it'll be more than, say, £30?!?

You'd be right, given that's what they try and sell 'supermarket' scopes for, which by their very nature are defective [;)]

The bottom line is we aren't expecting a great deal for them and it's probably less than you think. They are fairly large items which take up a lot of storage, this costs money, and we can't sell them as anything but seconds.

Could you post more specs. such as focal length, physical size, weight, etc.... I had a quick scan on your website but couldn't find the 5" scope listed [I didn't look that hard!]

Good point! It didn't occur to me that the software would automatically remove them from the site when I deducted the faulty scopes from stock.

Phenix 5" Rich field scope...

Aperture 127mm
Focal Length 700mm
Focal ratio f/5.5
Weight 4.35kg

The objective is a standard achromatic air-spaced doublet...

The tube and dew shield are aluminium, finished in a white enamel paint. Focuser body and lens cell are a hard ABS type platsic (pretty much clones of the Meade AR5 parts). The draw tube is chrome plated metal, as are the rack and pinion of the focuser.

What's the minimum you'd take for one?

Ok, like my first post, £30 then and that seems to be generous!

To reitterate...

The scope in the auction ended at £50 + postage, which is a fair price I feel if someone is looking for a large terrestrial scope, or a large aperture guide/finder scope where the optical fault isn't critical.
