COSMIC QUEST – A HISTORY OF ASTRONOMY

Two of the country’s most respected astronomers, both graduates of the University of Leicester, will take a look at some of the inspirational characters and outright mavericks who have expanded the boundaries of astronomy.

Heather Couper and Nigel Henbest are this year’s speakers at the 2011 University of Leicester Alumni Association Annual Lecture on Thursday 24 March at 6pm at Embrace Arts, Lancaster Road, Leicester.

Over the millennia astronomy has flourished into the most all-embracing of the sciences.

‘Cosmic Quest’, a presentation by two of today’s most respected astronomers, concentrates on the people and personalities who have asked the biggest questions of all and pushed forward our knowledge of the heavens.

Sharon Cooke, Development Manager at the University of Leicester, commented: “I am delighted that our very own alumni, Heather Couper and Nigel Henbest, who are two of today’s most respected astronomers, will be looking closely at the inspirational personalities who have shaped our understanding of the Universe. This popular annual lecture is free to attendees who will also be able to support Student Scholarships on the night.”

Heather Couper is both a graduate and Honorary Graduate of the University of Leicester and also studied astrophysics at the University of Oxford. She is an international broadcaster and writer on astronomy and now works entirely in the media.

Nigel Henbest, also a graduate of the University of Leicester, is internationally acclaimed for his popularisation of science, specialising in astronomy and space. He has written 36 books and more than 1000 articles which have been translated into 27 languages and his television productions have received awards in Britain and in the US. In 2012 he will take flight into space as an astronaut with Virgin Galactic.

Together they have formed Hencoup Enterprises, an international science and media consultancy based in the UK to expand the frontiers of science popularisation in all media.

‘Cosmic Quest – A History of Astronomy’ is free, but tickets must be obtained in advance through the Embrace Arts box office, tel 0116 252 2455, or see www.embracearts.co.uk.

The Lecture will take place at Embrace Arts, the University of Leicester’s arts centre, Richard Attenborough centre, Lancaster Road, Leicester.
