Amazing Coronal Hole

Postby jsc248 » Wed Oct 21, 2015 10:39 am

Hi Gang,

This, for me, was one of those jaw dropping images that astronomers capture now and then. It shows a large coronal hole on the surface of the Sun. This is where magnetic field lines are open to space. Take a look at the image here http://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/coronal-hole-front-and-center and if you have time take a look at the other solar images accessible from the webpage

To me astronomy is looking up and thinking "What the heck is going on up there!!"

Coronal hole is a region on the sun where the magnetic field is open to interplanetary space. And sending coronal material speeding out is called a high-speed solar wind stream.
