Feedback on my first scope buy ?

Postby emah » Thu Feb 08, 2018 7:07 pm

You've seen similar questions hundreds of times, and I've read the answers, but before I go ahead, could you give some feedback ?
I'm getting my first real scope (best I had so far was a 70mm Travelscope with camera tripod). Will use it summer half of year in south Sweden, at summer house, so not very much light pollution from city lights, but need to avoid time around midsummer. Main interest DSOs, and a bit of planets. Budget GBP/USD 300-400.
I don't want to buy better scopes at regular intervals, so trying to get something to grow with.
So; I'm thinking a Dobsonian Sky Watcher Skyliner 200P to start out with, grow into it, and then later progress into photo/video astronomy and either buy or build my own GoTo mechanics/electronics/SW (got the skills). Any proposals on better way to spend initial money ?

Dobsonians are not the easiest for photography, and were never designed for it. The idea of the Dobsonian is that all your money gets put into the biggest aperture you can get, and you cope with finding and pointing at objects the best you can. I have seen some examples of converting Dobsonians to computerised mounts. I'm not sure the ethos of Dobsonian use, and computerised mounts are compatible, but it might be fun to try.
I use an 11" Celestron SCT (CPC 1100) on an equatorial wedge, housed in a 2.2m Pulsar observatory. I use a ZWO ASI1600MC and Canon 500D for imaging.

100% photography, forget a dob unless all you want is the Moon and Jupiter/Saturn short exposures

People spend THOUSANDS to do imaging.

Personally it is 100% possible with this, remember you can easily take HOURS of 30 second exposures (or just 5/10 ? ), with this and stack. ... -watcher-0

Better ... ky-watcher

I use an AltAz mount and YES they ARE fine for imaging

+ this ... b20-camera
Celestron Edge 8" Evolution, Esprit 120mm triplet, Sky Tee2, WO Binoviewers, 2" and 1.25" eyepieces, ZWO ASI 178MM camera, Neximage 5, Nikon D4s, D810, Nikkor 70-200 F2.8, Nikkor 14-24, Nikkor 70-200, Nikkor 24-120, Sigma 150-600 Sport
