Can I use my iMac for image processing?

Postby gord » Sun Nov 12, 2006 11:20 am

Hello all...

I am looking at setting up for a first few tentative steps into ccd imaging (previously only doing some prime focus with dslr). I have a suitable cheapo webcam and adaptor etc... But it is the processing that I am pondering.

Software like Registax seems to be designed for PC/windows. I am a devoted Apple Mackintosh user and would like to source suitable astronomy and imaging software for my preferred platform.

I'd appreciate any advice and experience from other mac using astronomers out there.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve,

Sorry you haven't had any replies. Although I use a PC for pretty much all my work and 'serious' processing, I'm also a Mac fan and have a Mac Mini which I like to use to try out other approaches. So - for instance - there is complicated freeware PC software which will rip my DVDs into a format which I can watch on my iPod, and there's a really neat Mac application which does the same thing with no fuss.

Unfortunately you're talking about a minority within a minority... most people who have workstations are wintel users, who are not into astro, who don't do image processing. Shrinking that minority into something which is popular enough for someone to write code for is tricky.

If you do come across any useful applications, please let us know. I use the PC because usually I have to; I'd love to be able to do the same thing, easier, on the Mac if there's anything out there.

Best
Mark

Steve,

There is a program called Linkeos, which was distributed on a Sky at Night CD about June I think, which claims to do a similar thing to Registax, on the Mac. It claims to stack images in QuickTime movie files produced by a Toucam or similar, attached to a Mac. I have not tried it, as I don't have a portable Mac. You could do a web search for it.

I do do a lot of astro image processing in Photoshop on a desktop Mac. Hower, I got a laptop PC specifically for taking the images. This is because so little astro hardware is supported by Mac software, sadly. In many cases, I have found that where Mac drivers are available for hardware, they offer less features than the PC equivalent.

Basically you need to find out whether Mac drivers are available for your webcam. If so, you should be able to record QuickTime movies to a Mac and stack them in Linkeos. You can then sharpen and tweak them in Photoshop, if you have got it. There is a free alternative called The Gimp, which is Linux software that will run under Mac OSX. This is claimed to be almost as good as Photoshop, but I haven't used it much.

Hope you make some progress.

David

I use a Mac and Photoshop CS2 for almost all my astro image processing. There’s a must have book you should get:

Photoshop Astronomy by R Scott Ireland (ISBN 0-943396-85-9) - it gives pretty in-depth coverage of all aspects of Photoshop and astro imaging.

Hey gord, as "a devoted Apple Mackintosh user" would you recommend the Apple iMac MK452LL/A iMac All-in-One Desktop PC w/ Retina 4K Display? I saw a review on TopProducts and I am considering buying one. Please advice and thank you.
