You have a valid point Justin,
It just seems a shame that in a poll of great astronomers, one of the true greats (IMHO) has to be ommitted.

A few points about the 'missing' name...

First off, with the exception of Schmidt and Lovell, all the folks on the list are deceased. It's not uncommon with competitions or lists like this to restrict to dead people - avoids potential embarassment or (god forbid) libel.

Secondly, even if he were approached about the list, I doubt for a second Patrick would agree to be included [:)]

Finally - and perhaps most obviously - the competition is run by the Sky at Night, will predominantly be entered by Sky at Night viewers and/or forum members, and Patrick is synonymous with that programme. If he didn't win it would be a surprise. If he did it would 'obviously' be a fix!

Mark

PS - this in no way disrespects the man - like so many others I wouldn't be here, wouldn't have got interested in the hobby, if it hadn't been for the programme and a copy of the Observers' Guide to Astronomy I was given in primary school..
