Get a heads up on the best celestial events to observe

If by some chance it's not bucketing down this evening there is a nice photo opportunity - the Moon and venus will be a bit over a degree apart in the SW sky just after sunset - the Moon is only 3% illuminated at this point so will be a very thin crescent - Venus will be the easier to spot - look a little below for the Moon.

Anytime from 1630 onwards. If anyone has a perfect horizon it may even be possible to glimpse Mercury though that's still pretty close to the Sun.

Its looking great thanks Paul. I think the clear sky Gods are smiling on me at the moment. Am currently in Fulham in London and have a clear view across the Thames with Venus and the moon clearly in view. Have taken a few pics and will post them later on. Should look better when its slightly darker.

Would love to see your images Chris - we're clouded out by some very snowy looking clouds here in NI

Hopefully might be able to put them on tomorrow. I am slightly jealous of the 'snowy looking' clouds actually would love to have a bit of snow, so far this has been a very sorry excuse for a winter. Although should not complain about having clear skies.. as they have been a bit of a rarity recently.

Thanks for the heads-up on this! I wasn't sure if I would get to see this as cloud was rapidly approaching, plus the wind was blowing the camera all over the place, so though I took over 100 shots of it, most were blurred. See the Observations section for the successful ones - even those aren't pin sharp though. :(

This was a lovely sight but I didn't have a camera with me - thanks for the heads up!

Here's one of the promised images... I am not at home so this has been done from a laptop that has no image processing software whatsoever...

Hope to have better ones when I am home, still I am quite pleased with it.

Cheers

Heres some more, I took them on the north bank of the Thames right next to Craven Cottage just as the game was finishing on saturday. I got a few funny looks as I propped my camera up on a wall and was snapping away. I was pleased with the photo results, and was reasonably pleased with the result in the football too as Spurs pulled off a draw with a last minute equaliser.

I have some more images here on my website: http://www.space-and-telescope.com/ChrisMoon.aspx
