Thanks for the info.
The 400D has the problrm that 30 seconds is the longest single exposure it will take and it has no B setting but I shall try it out.

30 seconds? Check my website to see what I can do with 8. If you use it with a telescope on a mount which isn't driven, the maximum exposure goes down or you get star trailing. Even so, I reduce my magnification to 6 times and use an 8 second exposure.

I think there's a lot you can experiment with without a telescope and I'm finding new ways to enhance my constellation shots all the time.
