Small 1/4 moon shaped object

Postby maz » Sat Dec 31, 2005 6:06 pm

Strange request, anyone have any ideas what I'm looking at... its very interesting to say the least ?
It appears like a 1/4 moon but only about1mm size in a 7mm eyepeice on a 70mm refractor.
Its roughly setting in the south east almost at the horizon (Well the roofs of the houses)
I'm near upminster in essex uk

It sounds like you were looking at Venus, though it should have been in the south-west[&:]. I'm not too sure on the details but I believe it's now the brightest it's going to be for some time. Looks really nice doesn't it?

Happy new year,
John.

How bright is it? I tend to agree with Jaycee - though it should be setting in the SW.

I tend to agree. Other then location it sounds like Venus.

Do you have a good star book or computer software to help you with identifing objects. A real simple to use freeware program is Stellarium. Give that a try.
