I use an 11" SCT from (also) a very light polluted site & my views of M81 & M51 are very much the same. [:(]

Can I get away with SN1987 in the Large Magellanic Cloud?
It would be putting it mildly if I said I was slightly obsessed with it.

The coordinates of SN 1987A are RA 05 : 35 : 27 (h:m:s) Dec-69 : 16.2
(deg:m)

coords courtesy of Robin on the uk.sci.astronomy site.

exploded 23rd feb 1987. still unfolding, should be visible in the sky again in 2007.

I have never seen it live, only through other pictures. Only visible below 21 deg so I'm told.

From the light polluted skies I observe from, all the galaxies are just their fuzzy cores. I never saw any structure, just the general shape. For example the M51 two fuzzy patches, M 82 an elongated patch, M104 another elongated patch. I never got to see the M101 and the M33 possible because of their low surface brightness.

Likewise, I've never seen M101. Just too large & dim to make out from a light polluted sky. Many's the time I've also hunted for M33 without success. However, I have been lucky to make it out on a few exceptional nights. Although no detail was visible, the ghostly shape was definitely there to see.
