So what is everyone's favourite deep sky object?

Postby big dipper » Wed Dec 07, 2005 3:16 am

I'm lucky enough to own an 11" SCT which is just as well, as I live in the light polluted city of Oxford.

Although the likes of M42 looks impressive, my vote goes to M17, the Swan nebula, in Sagittarius. Although low down as seen from the UK, this object really resembles its name when viewed through a telescope on a clear & transparent night. Here's an image I took of it with my film camera.

Alas, the Swan is now out of view til next Spring, but is worth checking out if you have a good view to the south.

Iguess my favourite deep sky object was the forst I ever observed through a telescope and that was the Ring Nebula (M57) in Lyra.

Has to be M64 - the Blackeye galaxy...

Here's a pic I took last winter:

Hi there.
My favourite deep sky stuff using a 12" newt from very light polluted skies are -
Nebulas - M42
Globulars - M13
Galaxies - M31

Can you see any detail in the spiral arms of M81? Even with the whirlpool galaxy I only get to see 2 small white fuzzies !!
