The Ring Vs The Dumbell

Postby big dipper » Fri Dec 09, 2005 12:00 am

I started this debate on another forum as to which looked most impressive through the scope.............the tiny celestial smoke ring, M57 - or the Dumbell nebula, M27. Opinions were mixed.

So which looks most impressive? My vote goes to the Dumbell. To me it just seems a good bit bigger & brighter than the Ring. It is also easier, in my view, to image as it has a nice bright guide star in view which, in my scope, places the Dumbell nicely in the centre of the field of view.

So what do others think? Feel free to add to this thread i.d.c. [:D]

Dumbell for me - it was the first non-galaxy object I looked at through a telecope but it is a pig to shoot:-

Observing from light polluted skies I find the ring brighter and more visible than the dumbell so my vote goes for the ring.
