The Ring Vs The Dumbell nebula

Here's a debate that I've started on other forums. Argueably the two 'grandest' planetary nebulae visible in the summer sky are the Ring nebula (M57) and the Dumbell nebula (M27). Both can be seen through even modest apertures.

So which gets your vote as being the showpiece of the two? In other words, which one looks to be the most impressive to you at the eyepiece?

I'll start the ball rolling. My vote goes to the Dumbell. With my LPR filter it looks bigger & brighter, with the Dumbell shape easy to discern. It's one object that I tend to turn to again & again.

However I've seen votes cast for either object. So feel free to add to this thread with your thoughts.

In terms of a colour CCD image, M27 is a 'showpiece' object. Hydrogen red with beautiful contrasting blue detail.

I never seem to tire of this one, and image it every year.

Just thought that I could actually upload an image of it, so hopefully it should appear with the 'post'

Do you have an image you could share with us? It would be great to see some of your work.

Difficult one that! I guess it has to be the Dumbell as it has such a lovely shape! I wish I had got a better focus on my Ring Nebula shot!

Dave, I've noticed that if we try to upload a picture here as an attachment, we end up with an 'Awaiting Approval' message - which means we have to wait for an admin to come along before the image appears. However, if you post an image from an existing website using the IMG tags, it appears automatically.

Fine - if you have a website. Not so, if you don't.

People here without a website may wish to sign up (it's free, BTW) to http://photobucket.com They can then upload their images there from their PC & can then use the IMG tags on that site to post their images here.

Just a thought............ [:)]

M1, the Crab Nebula is also another favourite of mine Andy, and I've attached an image of it here.

You've still got better colour rendition than me, Steve. Enjoyed seeing your results on astronomy.com also.

Andy,

The colour may be there but my shot brings a new meaning to 'fuzzies' ! Must try harder!
