Stellar line-up for 2017 Mayo Dark Sky Festival Top academics from Universities in Hong Kong, Exeter, York, Maynooth and Dublin have been signed up to speak at the second Mayo Dark Sky Festival in the west of Ireland, which takes place from 27 th to 29 th October. The towns and villages bordering Ireland’s only Dark Sky Park have teamed up to organise a three day event that offers talks on physics, astrophysics, culture and the environment, as well as rocket and science workshops, exhibitions and other family friendly events. “3 days, 3 venues, 3 themes” is how Georgia MacMillan, one of the festival organisers, summed it up. “We want to share our passion for the pristine natural skies of this part of Mayo with as many people as possible. Events will include talks by world class speakers including Dr. Luis Flores Castillo of CERN Switzerland and the University of Hong Kong, Professor Michael Burton, Director of the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, and Susan McKenna-Lawlor, Professor Emeritus at Maynooth University”Mayo Dark Sky Park boasts some of the most pristine skies in Europe – one awestruck visitor was heard to remark “The starlight is casting shadows!” Happily, this year’s festival also coincides with the 2017 International Observe the Moon night on October 28th. Observers will have the best of both worlds – a little moon gazing to start with, but the moon will set around midnight, revealing the true wonders of the park’s dark sky observing sites. Mayo’s rugged Atlantic seaboard offers a dramatic backdrop to a relaxed and fun-filled festival.
