Last month the 150th anniversary of the birth of Kristian Birkeland was celebrated in Norway. So well-known in his home land of Norway that his portrait appeared on the 200 NKr bank note until recently and he also features on the tail of a Norwegian Airlines plane, he is generally not well known in Britain. His life is both funny and ultimately very sad. His greatest work was to identify the origin of the aurora, the Northern Lights and to show they were electrically driven by the Sun. Unfortunately, he did the work about 60 years before the space age was eventually to prove him right. Indeed, he also narrowly missed also discovering the electron and, if that were not enough, he more or less founded what is now the largest company in Norway by chance as well as inventing an electromagnetic gun whose principle was used by the US military 70 years after his death.
