In 1995 the first planet orbiting a star like our sun was discovered. Using a variety of methods the number of confirmed exoplanets is now around 2000. Planets come in very different masses and sizes and show interesting dynamics in their orbits. Full planetary systems with up to 7 planets have been found as well as planets in binary stars systems, making science fiction a reality. It has also become possible to study protoplanetary disks in unprecedented detail. These disks hold the reservoir of material from which planets may form, and they are considered to be the birthplaces of planets. Cathie Clarke is Professor of Theoretical Astrophysics at the Institute of Astronomy at Cambridge.

Derek McNally looks at the changes in astronomy over the last 60 years, from computers where you had to crank a handle to the vast changes that have taken place in detectability over that period, and in particular in the last 10 years. We live in exciting times and have recently discovered that a nearby star has a planet that may share a temperature regime with the Earth! Derek McNally taught Astronomy at UCL while based at the University of London Observatory, where he became the Director. His research interests were in star formation and he was the second person to try to compute collapse under gravity. He has served the as a Secretary and Treasurer to the RAS, and as General Secretary to the IAU.
