A new UK solar observing festival has been announced for this summer, taking place at Kelling Heath Holiday Park in North Norfolk.

Aimed at both amateur astronomers and beginner stargazers, the UK's first Solarfest is taking place from 20 - 24 June in 2024 at the holiday park, which has become well known for its annual star parties over the years.

However, this particular event focusses on the closest star to Earth: our host star, the Sun.

As solar activity ramps up, we're seeing much more phenomena on the Sun in the form of solar flares, sunspots and coronal mass ejections.

These solar eruptions are leading to increased aurora displays, like the aurora of 10 May that made headlines across the world.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured incredible videos of solar flares in the run up to the 10 May aurora event.

This makes now a great time to get involved in observing our host star and experiencing the incredible activity that can be seen on its surface.

But safety is paramount, as observing the Sun with the naked eye or 'regular' astronomical equipment can cause damage to both your eyes and your equipment.

Solar observing can only be safely done with proper, designated equipment in the form of certified solar filters and solar telescopes, acquired from accredited sellers.

And that's where Solarfest comes in.

What to expect from the UK Solarfest 2024

Solarfest is running this summer at Kelling Heath Holiday Park, located between Sheringham and Holt in North Norfolk.

It takes place from Thursday 20th June to Monday 24th June 2024, with camping pitches available.

"Solarfest is the first UK 'Solar star party' of it’s kind, and we're hosting it at Kelling Heath Campsite, famous for its dark skies and the site of the largest star parties in the UK," says organiser Nick Vermeulen, who hosts the Practical Astronomy Show in Kettering once a year.

"We're running the event in a similar vein to most star parties, but with a key focus on observing the Sun.

"Solarfest is aimed at amateur astronomers with an interest in solar observing and photography, but beginners and families who are interested in learning more about safe observing of our host star are very welcome too."

The site offers free wi-fi, free parking, as well as an accessible indoor and outdoor pool.

It's pet-friendly and there are two restaurants and a pub, along with the beauty of the surrounding areas.
