The 12 August 2026 solar eclipse will live long in the memory.

The hype surrounding this solar eclipse was palpable.

In the days leading up to the event, our email inbox and social media channels were flooded with people across the eclipse path looking forward to the event and asking questions about the best ways to see it.

If course, there was the inevitable rush to buy solar eclipse glasses! It seems the UK as a whole had completely sold out, and we're sure it must have been the same in other regions where the eclipse was visible.

This was followed by many observers adopting the colander method of projecting the shadow of the eclipse onto a piece of card.

A total solar eclipse was visible in Greenland, Iceland and Spain and a partial solar eclipse was visible across the rest of Europe, the UK and Ireland and parts of the USA and Canada.

Here are just some of the best images we've received by those who were able to catch the solar eclipse from their location – and those who travelled far to capture totality.

Thanks to everyone who sent their images in – it has been a joy to be connected to the event by getting a glimpse of how much it has inspired those who managed to catch it – often through the clouds.

If you've managed to capture an image of the eclipse, send us your images and they could end up in a future issue of BBC Sky at Night Magazine.
