Saturn is located in the constellation of Cetus, the Whale for the first half of October
The planet is well placed from the UK, able to reach a peak altitude approaching 40° – slightly less than halfway up the sky – when due south.
This beautiful ringed planet reaches opposition on 4 October, which is when it's opposite the Sun in the sky.
At that point it will appear like an off-white mag. +0.1 star to the naked eye, south and east of the Great Square of Pegasus asterism.
October 2026 is a fantastic time to see Saturn. If you've never done so before, now's your chance.
Here's our quick guide on how to make the most of it.

Saturn October 2026 – key dates and tips
A 97%-lit waxing gibbous Moon sits north of Saturn as darkness falls on 24 October.
Through a telescope, its higher altitude compared to previous years is very much welcomed, allowing us to see the planet through steadier air.
The famous rings are currently opening up as Saturn’s southern pole slowly increases its tilt towards Earth.
A good test of seeing conditions is to look out for the narrow Cassini Division that separates Saturn’s outer A ring from the inner B ring.

Under poor seeing, this narrow dark line will tend to blur. With the planet’s current tilt of around –7.5°, also look out for the tricky C ring which sits inside B ring.
This is fainter than the other two, but the current tilt may help you pick it out.
Opposition is an interesting time to view the rings, as the opposition effect causes them to brighten for a few days.
Various effects work together to cause the rings to brighten, one of the easiest to understand being when the shadows cast by ring particles become hidden behind the bright faces of the particles.
This makes the whole system appear brighter at opposition than it does a week before or after.
