That meant the Moon would appear at its smallest apparent size from our perspective on Earth; hence the term 'micromoon' or, in this case 'Blue Micromoon'.
Many observers took to photographing the 31st May 2026 Blue Moon, some capturing it just above the horizon and making it look much larger than normal (an effect known as the Moon illusion).
