There's a 'Blood Moon' lunar eclipse visible on 27/28 August 2026, during which Earth will pass between the Moon and the Sun, casting Earth's shadow onto the surface of the Moon.
During the lunar eclipse, Earth's shadow will seem to take a 'bite' out of the bright full Moon, causing it to turn a deep rusty red colour.
Greatest eclipse – the moment when most of the Moon is covered by Earth's shadow – occurs at 04:13 UTC on 28 August, which is 05:13 BST or 00:13 EDT.
As you may have noticed, the semi-inconvenient timings of this lunar eclipse make it much more of a commitment to view than the 12 August 2026 solar eclipse, which occurred in the early evening.

So if you can't face dragging yourself to an observing spot at such an early – or late – hour, you can always watch online.
This lunar eclipse is only visible in North and South America, the UK and Europe and West Africa so, again, if you're not located in a place where you'll be able to see it, watching online is a good option.
